On November 14 the NLATU hosted our 2015 provincial championship which was held this year in Stephenville. The tournament saw over 70 competitors in 25 divisions which gathered from all accross the province. Our organization involves schools in St John’s, CBS, Bay Roberts, Blaketown/Whitbourne, Corner Brook, Stephenville, and Labrador City.
The NLATU made great strides this year in becoming both the official Taekwondo Canada member organization for our province and the interim sport organization recognized by Sport NL. We are interested in growing the sport in this province and to that end we employed a talent scout (Reggie Lawrence of Satori Elite Athletics) to assess the abilities of athletes at this tournament for purposes of developing a provincial team to eventually go and represent our province at a national championship.
She spearheaded many of the great things achieved by our association this year and devoted countless hours of her time to the development of taekwondo in Newfoundland and Labrador. As a token of our appreciation to Arlene we established an award, the Collin’s Cup, to be awarded each year at the provincial tournament to the student who shows the most guts, determination, and indomitable spirit. Arlene, who was also one of our center referee’s, selected this years recipient to be Riley Lockyer of Corner Brook. Great job Riley.
