Athletes from all across the province were in Gander on Nov. 14th & 15th, for the Newfoundland Labrador Amateur Taekwondo Union’s 2014 Provincial Tournament . The event took place over 2 days, Friday and Saturday, at the Canadian Forces Base Gander and was attended by clubs from Corner Brook, Stephenville, Bay Roberts, Trinity, St. John’s, CBS and Paradise. Athletes competed in Poomsae (patterns) as well as Kyorugi (sparring). Many of the athletes who had taken part in the Provincials had previously competed in the Cody Coombs Memorial Tournament in Bay Roberts in October as a lead up to this event. The provincial championship hosted _ competitors along with an even greater number of spectators. Medals were awarded for _ divisions over the course of the two day event. We are very grateful for the hospitality of the Canadian Armed Forces.
“We’re lucky to have this opportunity,” said Ian Crocker, Head Instructor for Samjae Taekwondo. “A lot of our students are in the regular training stream, but we have some who are more competitive, and with these tournaments available it makes sense to offer that as well. These are only the first two of five tournaments scheduled for us this season.” The big focus for the competitive athletes, however, will be an off-Island tournament in March or April. “When we decide which one we’ll take in, then the really hard work starts” Mr. Crocker said. “It’s a very exciting time for us.”
The NLATU will use attendance and results from this and other tournaments to help select a team of provincial representatives that can travel outside the province and eventually compete at the national level.
